Tributes paid as Helen Johnson Houghton dies aged 102

Wednesday 05 December 2012

Racing: The granddaughter of “extraordinary” former trainer Helen Johnson Houghton paid tribute after she died on Tuesday aged 102.

Johnson Houghton was the first female trainer to win an English Classic when 50-1 chance Gilles De Retz took the 2000 Guineas in 1956.

And Eve Johnson Houghton, who now trains at Woodway, said: “She was extraordinary in so many ways, and a pioneer in racing.”
