Police arrest man for rape suspect bomb

EmailPolice arrested a man as he tried to plant a bomb near the home of one of the suspects in the gang rape and murder of a student two weeks ago, Indian police said today.
The man was caught on Monday night in the slums where four of the six defendants lived.
Police said today they would be seeking the death penalty for five of those charged and are carrying out bone tests to determine whether or not the sixth is a juvenile. Under-18s cannot be prosecuted for murder.
Protests calling for tougher action on sexual assaults have swept India and beyond and continued today as the 23-year-old's ashes were scattered in the Ganges.
The Indian army and navy, ruling Congress party head Sonia Gandhi and a number of hotels and clubs cancelled their New Year's celebrations.
