Quakers' proud role

Tuesday 08 January 2013

I found Robin Jervis's letter on Christianity (M Star January 3) to be most enlightening.

Look at the Quakers, who are in my view the most welcoming of Christian groups and have a noble record of fighting injustice from the slave trade to apartheid and nuclear arms.

I have some Quaker friends who have been in prison for non-violent nuclear resistance and civil disobedience in the 1980s and continue to campaign for an end to wars.

The quakers were also one of the first Christian groupings to support gay marriage and equal rights for same-sex couples long before more established churches.

And didn't the Liberation Theory support Sandinistas in Nicaragua when they were overthrowing the US-backed Samoza dictatorship in the 1970s?
