Foreign funds nothing to be ashamed of

Tuesday 15 January 2013

I cannot understand people's indignation that the USSR gave financial help to the CPGB. Don't these detractors understand the meaning of solidarity?

The amounts of money were a drop in the ocean compared to the millions given by capitalism to destabilise the party and the British labour movement.

The Star and its predecessor the Daily Worker were proud I'm sure that the Soviet government bought thousands of copies of the paper to be distributed throughout the Soviet Union.

When I was director of the National Museum of Labour History at Limehouse I was proud of the fact that I was asked to teach British labour history to delegations from the USSR.

When the museum in conjunction with the Cuban embassy unveiled a plaque on the house where Engles had lived in Eastbourne all the costs were met by the Cubans - something I and the rest of the museum team were incredibly proud of.
