Oldham 3 Liverpool 2: Reds humbled by battling Boundary Park side

The Boundary Park faithful were on their feet after just three minutes when Smith headed in Youssouf M’Changama’s cross to give Paul Dickov’s side a dream start.

Reds skipper Luis Suarez levelled the score in the 17th minute as he squeezed in from close range but Smith struck again on the stroke of half time to put Oldham back in front.

The hosts then extended their lead three minutes after the restart with a superb back-post header and though Joe Allen managed to pull one back with a deflected volley, Dickov’s men held firm to book their slot in the fifth round.

Elsewhere, Leeds saw off Tottenham 2-1 at Elland Road.

Luke Varney fired the home side ahead in the 15th minute as Spurs failed to capitalise on a series of first-half opportunities.

Neil Warnock’s side doubled their lead five minutes after the restart as Ross McCormack managed to turn Steve Caulker and fire home.

Spurs made a fight of it as Clint Dempsey headed home Gareth Bale’s cross, but Jon Obika spurned a fine opportunity to equalise late on.

At full time Warnock praised his side of “heroes.”

“It’s a fabulous performance,” he said.

“It’s a great day for us. The atmosphere was good, two cracking goals.

“There were a lot of heroes today. It was a typical FA Cup tie today.”

Finally in today's midday kick-off, holders Chelsea were saved by a late Fernando Torres goal as they drew 2-2 at Brentford.

Marcello Trotta netted from close range to put the hosts ahead before Oscar had the Blues level 10 minutes after the break.

A Harry Forrester penalty put Brentford back in front, but with time running out Torres’s 18-yard curler set up a fourth-round replay at Stamford Bridge.

Afterwards, Bees boss Uwe Rosler praised his side.

“We deserved that luck from what we have put in compared to what Chelsea put in over the 90 minutes,” the former Manchester City striker said.

“There is a football god up there and he is on our side.”
