Flight (15)

Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Thursday 31 January 2013

Robert Zemeckis's first action film in 12 years soars to promising heights with Denzel Washington at the helm as a drug-taking, alcoholic airline pilot.

It opens with Washington in a hotel room with a naked flight attendant (Nadine Velazquez), swigging beer and snorting lines of coke before heading off to work.

When his plane develops technical problems in mid-air he miraculously crash-lands it upside down, saving most on board. He is hailed as a hero until the investigation that follows puts that into question.

The first part of this drama is heart-stoppingly thrilling but after the plane crash it plunges into predictable melodrama masquerading as depth.

Washington- deliberately looking worse for wear - gives a solid performance, earning him an Oscar nod.

He is joined by a first-class supporting cast which includes Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood and John Goodman.

Flight just about fails to live up to its promising take-off. Ultimately, it crashes and burns.
