Stadium workers strike in pay dispute

Tuesday 19 February 2013

Workers at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana stadium, one of the main 2014 World Cup venues, returned to work today after a one-day strike.

They have a threatened a full-scale walkout next week if bosses don't improve their pay, health care and meal vouchers.

The workers said that this stoppage was a warning, as negotiations with the construction companies are under way.

Union director Wagner Antunes Siqueira said they would wait for Friday's talks.

"If there is no agreement, we will hold an assembly to vote on an indefinite strike," Mr Siqueira said.

The renovation at the Maracana is already behind schedule. It was originally expected to be completed in December.
