Crane boss indicted over workers' deaths

Tuesday 09 March 2010

A crane company owner has been indicted in a New York court on criminally negligent homicide, assault and manslaughter charges after one of his rigs collapsed and killed two workers.

The top of the giant crane snapped and crashed onto a block of flats in Manhattan in 2008, just over two months after another crane collapsed elsewhere in the borough, killing seven.

The indictment named James Lomma and two of his companies.

Mr Lomma was given a week to pay $100,000 (£68,000) cash bail and was released.

His next court appearance was scheduled for April 6.

After the hearing, a father of one of the workers who was killed in the collapse said: "It will never bring my son back, but it might finally be the beginning of paying real attention to the safety of workers who risk their lives to feed their families."

Delay rather than resistance

Party political manoeuvring between the Greek social-democratic, conservative and fascist parties has delayed acceptance of the blackmail demands presented by the troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.
