Support builds for People's Charter

Monday 15 March 2010

Union delegates to the North West TUC's annual conference in Liverpool have voted overwhelmingly to take up the People's Charter petition, vowing to campaign for its progressive policies in workplaces.

Greater Manchester Trades Council Association activist Stefan Cholewska urged all trade unionists at the weekend to take up the charter's demands for "a fairer Britain - not a bankers' Britain."

Mr Cholewska revealed that campaigners would begin to deluge working-class communities in Salford and Rochdale in the run-up to the general election with 20,000 leaflets urging people to sign up.

The People's Charter, which is endorsed by the firefighters, post workers and Civil Service unions, is a massive petition calling on the government to end its privatisation of public services, build more council housing, raise the minimum wage and tear up anti-union laws that restrict workers fighting back against the bosses.

Delay rather than resistance

Party political manoeuvring between the Greek social-democratic, conservative and fascist parties has delayed acceptance of the blackmail demands presented by the troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.
