P.D. Crofts - Moments Before The Crash

Erroneous edit compromised historic sense

Thursday 18 March 2010

An unfortunate error crept into my review of Red Army Faction documentary history (M Star March 9).

As edited, my review stated that the faction assassinated Italian CDU prime minister Aldo Moro, effectively derailing the so-called "historic compromise" between the Communist Party and the Christian Democrats (CDU) by assassinating Moro, who was supporting this way of bringing the communists into government.

But the brigades' leadership was in prison at the time of the killing.

It was in fact orchestrated by the Italian secret service, who had penetrated the Red Brigades and were running it at the time.
