Hibernian 0-1 Rangers

Sunday 25 April 2010

Football: Rangers have wrapped up their 53rd Scottish league title championship courtesy of a fine goal from striker Kyle Lafferty.

The Northern Ireland international struck on 19 minutes and, although Rangers endured some nervy moments late on, they held on to win their second title on the trot.

Celtic's 2-0 victory earlier in the day at Tannadice meant that Rangers had to win at Easter Road in order to clinch the title. Despite missing Madjid Bougherra and with striker Kris Boyd on the bench, Rangers proved too strong for a Hibs side that has struggled of late.

The combination of Kevin Thomson, Steven Davis, Maurice Edu and Steven Whittaker in midfield allowed Rangers to dominate that area, albeit without creating too many chances.

The winning goal came when Kenny Miller found Lafferty on the left side of the box.

The in-form striker barged past two defenders before slotting the ball in at the far post.

The rare sound this year of the Rangers fans chanting his name undoubtedly delighted the Northern Irishman and he responded with his now customary robot dance.

Hibernian's main threat came from long-range efforts.

A Derek Riordan shot on 26 minutes almost caught Rangers keeper Allan McGregor unawares.

Unsurprisingly, Walter Smith could not hide his delight on the final whistle.

Indeed, the Gers boss has suggested prior to the match that winning the championship in this season of significant off-field problems might well be the most satisfying trophy of his career.

The fervent celebrations of the Rangers fans on the final whistle suggested that they share his view.
