Fish Story (15)

As fishy tales go, Yoshiro Nakamura's confounding, surrealist film is designed to challenge your conceptions of reality with its collage of convenience between pulp fiction and punk music.

It opens with an irascible old man in a mobile wheelchair, who arrives at a record store to find two nerds who know nothing of an approaching comet and decide to play the last copy of Fish Story.

Plagiarised from a badly translated book, it provides the thread to link a series of stories that lampoon pop culture as the world waits to see if five astronauts can avoid armageddon.

Essentially, first time writer-director Nakamura refreshes cinematic stereotypes and comic tropes with a sense of invention that belies the cynicism of our age.

What was that about a fish riding a bike?
