Swimming event triggers safety row

Friday 18 June 2010

Furious unions have questioned the health and safety arrangements at a major British swimming event being targeted by strike action.

Unison, Unite and GMB members are on strike for three days until Sunday at Tollcross Centre in Glasgow where the UK Swimming Masters event is being held.

Unison Glasgow branch secretary Brian Smith said that the unions had contacted the Health and Safety Executive.

"Our strike is rock solid. The only culture and sport staff on site are managers. We think they are getting help to run the event from volunteers from the Scottish Swimming organisation," he said.

"However we have serious concerns that these managers and the volunteers have not had the necessary health and safety training specific to this building."

A spokesman for the event said: "The centre will be open and the championships will remain unaffected.

"Talks are planned with the unions and we are hopeful that a settlement will be reached."
