and the off-on flashes of cabin lights; with crackle breaking into the pilot's strained tones; before the intercom cut out completely, a meal was served.
When an elderly woman in row nine spotted her roll bouncing along the aisle and requested another, the stewardess snapped: Never mind your bloody roll! Can't you see we're in an emergency! Those who heard were now under no illusions, and after the lights stopped flashing tried to stay calm, as they finished their supper in the dark.
