European trade unionists issue unity call against cuts

Wednesday 30 June 2010

RMT Conference: Delegates were boosted on Wednesday by European trade unionists who pledged to stand beside them in the fight against the disastrous EU-inspired privatisation agenda.

Speakers from as far afield as Hungary, Norway and Portugal shared their experiences of the assault on public ownership which has ravaged the transport sector.

"Our transport systems are under attack by neoliberal policies embodied in the Lisbon Treaty - a treaty that strengthens federalism and the domination of big-power neoliberalism and militarism," said Manuel Cruz, national secretary of Portuguese rail union SNTSF.

He called for cross-border solidarity to resist the sell-off of vital transport and public services.

Mr Cruz's call was echoed by Hungarian trade unionist Istvan Gasco, president of the country's VDSzSz rail union.

"We face common problems and it is essential that we work together to confront them," he said.

The Hungarian government has slashed more than 600 miles of track, including 30 branch lines, in just three years.

Delay rather than resistance

Party political manoeuvring between the Greek social-democratic, conservative and fascist parties has delayed acceptance of the blackmail demands presented by the troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.
