China warns Washington on Taiwan arms deal

Friday 27 August 2010

Beijing has condemned the Obama administration's decision to grant export licences to US firms that want to sell radar equipment to Taiwan's military and urged Washington to "avoid causing new harm to Sino-US ties."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu reiterated that "China firmly opposes the US selling weapons and relevant technical assistance to Taiwan," which Beijing claims as an inalienable part of its territory.

On Tuesday US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley revealed that the Obama administration had approved the export licences.

This "will allow the commercial export to Taiwan of defence services, technical data and defence articles to support Taiwan's existing air defence radar system and upgrades to existing radars," Mr Crowley explained.

Ms Jiang urged the White House to revoke its "wrong decision and put an end to arms sales to Taiwan and military ties with Taiwan."

Delay rather than resistance

Party political manoeuvring between the Greek social-democratic, conservative and fascist parties has delayed acceptance of the blackmail demands presented by the troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.
