World Cup veteran Varallo dies aged 100

Tuesday 31 August 2010

Football: Francisco Varallo, the last surviving player from the first World Cup final, died on Monday at the age of 100.

Varallo played for Argentina but was unable to prevent hosts Uruguay from claiming the Jules Rimet trophy with a 4-2 victory in 1930.

He later admitted the disappointment had never left him. In an interview to mark his 100th birthday, he said: "I achieved a lot of nice things in my career.

"However, in my whole life I've never felt such a bitter pain as losing that World Cup final against Uruguay in 1930.

"How I cried that day. Even now when I look back it still makes me angry."

Varallo's 194 goals for Boca Juniors remained a club record until it was broken this year by Martin Palermo.
