How we can make our alternatives to cuts a reality

Thursday 02 September 2010

As soon as the election was over, the rich and powerful - the people who really run the country - demanded that the new government get a move on and make the public spending cuts.

They blame the crisis on its victims. They want the poor to pay. The working class is expected to pay for a crisis that we did not cause through pay freezes, job losses and cuts in public services, benefits and pensions.

This year's Convention of the Left, which takes place in Manchester just before the Labour conference, aims once again to bring people together in order to discuss how we make the green, left, socialist and radical alternative a reality.

There certainly is an alternative.

Many economists warn against cutting during a recession.

The truth is that the wealth exists in society to pay for our essential needs. The government's cuts are senseless and stupid as well as savage.

A wide range of individuals and organisations continue to support the idea of left-green unity in action

These include include the Communist Party of Britain, Green Left, Labour Representation Committee, Respect, Socialist Resistance, SSP, SWP, and Scottish Left Review.

We hope that Morning Star readers will come to Manchester for both international and domestic debates over September 24-25 - and to discuss how we take things further.
