Scotland's Burns set for title clash

Friday 03 September 2010

Boxing: Ricky Burns faces the biggest fight of his career at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on Saturday night.

The Coatbridge fighter is set to take on Puerto Rico's Roman Martinez for the WBO super-featherweight title in a bout that few expect Burns to win.

The Scot will be meeting a man with a fearsome record that is not blemished by a single defeat in 24 fights and features 15 knockouts.

However, Burns will be able to call upon a huge amount of support from the home crowd and he believes that his preparations have been spot on.

"I'm in the best condition of my life," Burns said. "I know Roman is a great fighter. He is a big puncher as well - 15 knockouts from 24 fights - so I have prepared for a hard 12 rounds.

"Everyone knows I can hit and move, but we've been working on a few tactics for this fight. I have been in with big punchers before so I don't see that as being a problem."

Burns will be keen to avoid a slug-fest with the champion and admits that his ability to get his shots in quickly without leaving himself open to the counter-attack will be crucial.

"I always go for speed and skill and I think that is going to be key in this fight. You can't beat what you can't hit," Burns said.

However, the Scot's greatest asset will arguably be the home supporters who will be willing him on to victory and they will surely make the atmosphere uncomfortable for Martinez whose recent fights have generally been held in his homeland.

Burns said: "Every boxer wants home support, especially in the later rounds.

"I've an excellent support that follows me. They help to spur me on. I'm sure it's going to be a night to remember."

Burns can also count on the backing of the Scottish Parliament after Coatbridge and Chryston MSP Elaine Smith lodged a parliamentary motion of support for the boxer.

Elaine Smith MSP said: "Ricky is a hugely popular figure in Coatbridge and his title fight has got the entire town buzzing."

Burns, who has sold over 800 tickets for the fight, can expect his hometown of Coatbridge to come to a standstill as he takes on Martinez.

Smith added: "Scotland hasn't had a world boxing champion for several years now and I'm sure colleagues from all parties will want to wish Ricky the very best of luck as he prepares to step into the ring to rectify that."
