The working class should get out and vote in upcoming local government elections and ignore ultra-left calls for mass abstention, Greek communist leader Aleka Papariga urged at the weekend.
Addressing a popular communist youth festival in Patras, Ms Papariga said a vote for the KKE in November would "fight the dominant austerity policies," but abstention amounted to "giving up, failure to adopt a position."
Not voting would fail to punish politicians implementing regressive policies, she said. It would have the opposite effect and create "a dangerous neutrality and prepare the ground even better for new policies against the working classes and the people."
The November elections will be a test of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou's neo-liberal policies, especially this May's loan-for-cuts deal with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
