Tottenham manager Redknapp is the bookies' favourite to succeed Fabio Capello, who has confirmed that he intends to step down after the 2012 European Championships.
The Spurs boss insisted that he is not counting down the days until Capello quits his £6 million-a-year job, but would still relish the role if it came his way.
Redknapp said of the prospect of managing his country: "Honestly, it's not something I sit at home and ever think about. I really don't. I've always said if you're an Englishman, it would be hard to turn it down, because it's the pinnacle of your career."
He added: "Why do the English lads waste their time doing their coaching badges and all the rest of the work if they're never going to get the chance to manage at the top level?"
Redknapp has discovered that he could be without striker Jermain Defoe for eight weeks due to an injured ankle.
Defoe was stretchered off in England's 3-1 victory against Switzerland with damaged ankle ligaments.
