Based loosely on The Scarlet Letter - the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne and not the Demi Moore film version, as we are reminded repeatedly in the movie - Easy A is a smart, funny and sassy teen comedy.
In this incarnation our heroine Olive (Emma Stone) is branded the school slut after pretending to have sex with her gay friend to boost his image/popularity rating and providing the same service to other teenage geeky boys for cash or kind.
This could be Stone's pivotal role as she nails the part taking on the school Christian lynch mob by parading in sexy bustiers with the letter A for adulterer sewn on the front and delivering killer put-downs.
She is joined by a great supporting cast including Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as her laid-back and understanding liberal parents - the sort we all wished for.
Easy A gives a fresh new twist to a worn-out formula.
It is witty, clever and hugely entertaining and on par with Mean Girls and Clueless.
