Olympiakos v Arsenal preview: Arsene Wenger calls for calm after defeat to Swansea

Londoners must win in Greece to stand any chance of finishing top of Champions League group
Monday 03 December 2012

Football: Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal fans to be patient after Saturday’s surprise home defeat to Swansea.

The Gunners were beaten by two late goals from Swans striker Miguel Michu, prompting an angry response from supporters at Ashburton Grove.

Wenger’s players were booed off the pitch, but have the chance to respond tomorrow night in the Champions League when they face Olympiakos in Athens in their final match of the group stage.

“Let’s not go overboard,” Wenger said, adding that “if you look at people’s reaction, everything is dramatic. What is important is to be capable to play football.”

Wenger has rested several key players for the Greece trip, including Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker.

Youngsters Zak Ansah, Sead Hajrovic, Elton Monteiro, Chuba Akpom and James Shea are all in contention to make their senior debuts for Arsenal, who have already qualified but can top their group if they beat Olympiakos and Schalke fail to beat Montpellier.

Manchester City face Dortmund, and will qualify for the Europa League if they win and Ajax fail to beat Real Madrid.
