Former president Nelson Mandela is "doing very, very well" in a military hospital, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said today.

The 94-year-old hero of the anti-apartheid struggle was kept in the hospital for a third day to undergo further health checks.

Mandela has had a series of health problems in his life, having suffered from tuberculosis during his years in prison before battling cancer in 2001.
