There is an alternative to greed

As a season ticket-holder and co-owner of FC United of Manchester since our inception in 2005, I believe that there is now strong momentum behind the principle of football clubs at all levels having the most important stakeholders, the supporters, also being the custodians and administrators.

There are more than 100 clubs in the football pyramid today that have supporters trusts, with an increasing amount being fully supporter owned.

The supporter-owned models run on Industrial and Provident Society and co-op mechanisms and are driven and founded on community principles, and these clubs operate a one-member, one-vote system that ensures unscrupulous carpet baggers cannot take over and plunge those clubs into peril with debts.

I'd love to see your organ, and the media in general, espouse the benefits of supporters being involved in the running of their own clubs much more.

The current ideology that prevails in the top flight football is to worship Mammon, with commercial imperatives the be all and end all.

But the Football Association's risible fit-and-proper-person test is another example of how the governing body is derelict in its duty to serve and protect football and fans.

More and more, supporters are providing the antidote to this, spurred on by the success of the German leagues that operate a much more fan-friendly model.

We need to support this momentum and provide football with a real and sustainable alternative to the "greed is good" philosophy, which is leaving a generation and more of football fans completely disenfranchised from the game.
