Rangers v Berwick preview: Charles Green claims that Gers may invoke sex discrimination law

The Ibrox chief vowed earlier this week to take Rangers out of Scottish football after proposals for a new 12-12-18 league set-up were announced.

The plans, drawn up by the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League in conjunction with the Scottish Football Association, would see the Light Blues stay in Scotland’s basement tier next term — even if they win this season’s Third Division title.

As a result, the Ibrox chief is pushing ahead with plans to take his club out of the Scottish pyramid — and believes he has precedent on his side when he claims the club should be granted access to leagues in other countries.

He said: “As the structures stand now, there are not many options. But I’m not one for hiding my light behind a bushel.

“People say you can’t go into England because you are not allowed cross-borders (leagues).

“Well there is now a cross-border (league). You have a Uefa-sanctioned professional women’s league in Belgium and Holland, so we have a precedent there.

“If there was an opportunity to join a cross-border league and that was challenged by Uefa, I would go to Strasbourg and challenge the sexual equality.”

Green also mooted the idea of Rangers applying to join the English Conference set-up before attempting to rise up the leagues.

“I could join the Conference and I would be in a higher league than I’m in,” he said.

“I can tell you this, if the only option is to go into England and start at the lowest level, I believe Rangers fans would support that.”

QPR boss Harry Redknapp said today that both Old Firm clubs should be welcomed directly into England’s top flight. “They’re two of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said.

“We’ve got Welsh teams in the Premier League. Why not two Scottish teams?”

With the SPL still enjoying a winter break, Rangers take centre stage tomorrow as they host Berwick.

Having established a dominant 17-point lead at the top of the shop, Ally McCoist’s side will be confident of besting their mid-table opponents, though the sides shared the spoils in their last meeting in August.
