South African Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant announced a new minimum wage for farmworkers today.

The daily rate for manual labourers is to rise from £4.91 to £7.47. Ms Oliphant said it would be adjusted for inflation in the future.

Farmworkers had asked for £10.67 a day.

At least two people died in farm protests last year, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets during a January demonstration.

Vineyards in the Western Cape province, where the protests hit hardest, are key to South Africa's wine industry.

Miner Anglo American Platinum announced today that it made a loss of £455 million in 2012 after strikes shut down its operations for weeks.

It plans to close some mines and make up to 14,000 workers redundant.
