Organisers of Britain's biggest workers' gathering issued an urgent appeal for support today.

The Durham Miners Association has been hit with a £1 million legal bill after losing a court battle for compensation for miners' knee sufferers.

To keep the annual gala going, the association and the TUC have asked supporters to make a monthly donation.

The first gala was held 142 years ago and this year's will take place on July 13.
