Bruce hails award-winning Giggs

Monday 14 December 2009

Football: Steve Bruce has saluted Ryan Giggs after seeing his former Manchester United team-mate named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2009.

The 36-year-old took the prize ahead of F1 world champion Jenson Button and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis on Sunday night.

Bruce said: "I'm absolutely delighted for him. I played in his debut and I remember when he was a 14-year-old taking the mickey out of Viv Anderson, who was then England's right-back.

"What he's done - 11 Premier Leagues, is it? - it's frightening, the way he looks after himself. He's the total package."

Team of the Year went to England's Ashes-winning cricketers.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to golf legend Seve Ballesteros, who is battling a debilitating brain tumour.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt landed Overseas Sports Personality for the second year in a row.

Coach of the Year went to England football manager Fabio Capello and diver Tom Daley was named Young Sports Personality of the Year.
