China welfare hand-out

Tuesday 13 January 2009

CHINESE state media reported on Tuesday that the government will hand out 9 billion yuan (£902m) in aid to its poorest citizens two weeks before the country's most important holiday.

Xinhua said that 74 million Chinese who already receive welfare payments will receive a one-off payment of 100 yuan (£10) if they live in the countryside and 150 yuan (£15) if they live in a city.

The average annual income for rural workers in China is 4,140 yuan (£415) and 24,932 yuan (£2,500) for city-dwellers.
