One-man puppet show is best in years
WATCH my lips. The best ventriloquist act I ever saw was in the Albert Cavalcanti 1945 British film Dead of Night, when the dummy made a dummy out of the ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave), driving him to madness and murder.
WJay Johnson's award-winning Broadway act is the best ventriloquist solo London has seen since David Strassman was last here and that was 11 years ago.
His hand puppets include a knowing little boy, a boa constrictor, a tennis ball, a vulture, a raucous monkey and a face he draws on a board. The interplay between him and them is very amusing. His lips never move.
Johnson also offers a bit of ventriloquist history, some sentimental autobiography and a moving tribute to his mentor Art Sleving. The Arts Theatre's intimacy is good for him and the puppets instantly establish a rapport with the audience.
Johnson is very impressive and his one-man show is easy to recommended.
Plays until September 28. Box office: 0844 847 1721.
