I AGREE with Gerrard Sables (M Star June 29) that the parasitic growth of the new Labour project has made people finish supporting the Labour Party. The last two by-elections show that, if Labour sticks with the policies of neoconservatism, it will be terminal.
Gerrard says that we are heading for Cameron Tory government, which will prove to be truly Thatcherite.
The broad left needs to look for an alternative that represents true Labour principles and not the dogma of the free market. I think that it is already too late for the next election, thanks to 13 wasted years from "new" Labour.
It's time that the unions stopped automatically paying the political levy to the Labour Party. They could fund candidates who are committed to the redistribution of wealth in favour of ordinary British people.
Let's see our union money going to those committed to true Labour policies such as public control and ownership of the railways.
Candidates committed to a National Health Service that is truly free, with an end to prescription charges, and commitment to education that is truly comprehensive, giving equal opportunities to all so that they can take their education as far as they want or are able without having to worry about tuition fees and maintenance loans.
The unions should only finance candidates who stand as Labour/Co-operative Party candidates committed to common ownership and a true democratic society run and controlled by and for the benefit of the people of Britain and not just a privileged few.
It seems that the Labour Party is determined to destroy itself by trying to out-Tory the Tories and has totally abandoned its socialist and social democratic principles. The broad left needs to look for an alternative that represents true Labour principles.
