Research into smoker deaths

JIM Dymond asks (M Star June 13) for details of the research which suggests a difference in average of age of death between male smokers and non-smokers of 6.5 years.

The research was conducted as part of an anti-smoking campaign by Mary Shaw et al of Bristol University and reported in the British Medical Journal (January 1 2000).
