Eccleshall 0-0 FC United

MOORE & CO SOLICITORS' LEAGUE DIV 2: Staffordshire side Eccleshall held firm to hold league leaders FC United of Manchester to a goalless draw in front of a record home attendance of just over two thousand at Stafford Rangers' Marston road ground yesterday.

With seven changes from the team that went down 7-1 at the hands of the Manchester team in August, the home side proved rather than earned their point in this tough tackling division two encounter.

Kick off was delayed in order to pack the travelling army of FC United supporters safely in the ground, but even with the non-stop carnival roaring them on, Karl Marginson's men were unable to break down a well-organised home side.

Eccleshall captain Russell DeMatteo saw two first-half attempts on goal flash inches wide of the post, while at the other end 'keeper Louie Whiting saved smartly from Mark Rawlinson and Ryan Gilligan as United enjoyed a spell of pressure in the second period.

Eccleshall might have snatched victory late on when Barrie George saved a Paul Griffiths drive with his knees after a Karl Williams' pass split the FC United defence.

TEAMS:
Eccleshall: Whiting, Griffiths, McKinney, Hassall, Ridley, McMann, Reeves (Notice), Millington, DeMatteo, Warrender, Nicklin (Williams 25 )(Stevens 88)

FC United: George, Cullen, Elvin, Rawlinson (Gilligan), Chadwick, McCartney, Lyons, Carden, Mitten (Power), Patterson, Orr.

Attendance: 2,011.
