The birth of the new

(Tuesday 29 April 2008)
PREVIEW: May Day
Bridewell Hall, London EC4

WHAT does May Day signify for you? This is a question that a number of progressive musicians and film-makers asked themselves in preparation for a cultural event on May 1 at London's Bridewell Hall.

One important conclusion they reached was that May Day represents the birth of the new.

The green shoots of spring are a reminder that the day of unity and struggle for the working class and all who are fighting for their rights, is also a day when the world's people look forward to bringing into being a new society.

The concert takes up the theme of giving birth to the new as part of the celebrations. The programme includes new works for piano receiving their first performances, choruses for May Day and a specially made video.

The idea is that, in the midst of the great dangers and problems facing society, it is necessary for humanity to safeguard the future and affirm the new.

The birth of the new society comes out of the defeat of the old dying society. The concert aims to capture this quality of the human spirit, the quality of empowerment and express it in cultural and artistic terms.

The performers include renowned pianist Haydn Dickenson and the acclaimed socialist women's choir Velvet Fist. An exciting new video by film-maker Stuart Monro will also receive its first showing.

Tickets cost £12/£10 concessions, includes a free glass of wine. Held on May 1 at 7.30pm at Bridewell Hall, Bride Lane, Fleet Street, London EC4Y. Contact: (020) 7353-3331 or :info@stbridefoundation.org
