Global fado

(Friday 26 September 2008)
ALBUM: Mariza, Terra
(EMI)

PORTUGUESE fado diva Mariza has released her first studio album for years, following a barnstorming live recording and a gruelling world tour and it's a confident shift into new territory.

With Spanish producer Javier Limón in the control room and a host of guest musicians from across the globe, including Limón's very own Mallorcan singer Buika, Mariza has opted for a more earthy feel, as the title suggests.

She relies more on hand drums and piano than her previous works, which are more rooted in Lisbon's traditional fado stringed instruments - and even a laid-back muted trumpet for the almost Cuban-sounding track Beijo De Saudade.

Mariza's powerful yet controlled singing is what we all want to hear, however, and she does not disappoint.

This album breaks new ground yet honours the music that she loves the best. Outstanding.
