Political rap

(Friday 26 September 2008)
ALBUM: Ice Cube, Raw Footage
(William Morris Agency)

OVER the last 20 years, gangster rap has earned itself a reputation as one of the most sexist and violent forms of music and the grandfathers of this genre were NWA.

While founding members Dr Dre and Ice Cube have made no attempt to distance themselves from this, they have always asserted that the music reflects what is really is happening in the most deprived areas of the US.

On his eighth album Raw Footage, Ice Cube goes political and the stand-out track Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It ridicules politicians who blame everything from the war on Iraq to global warning on the genre.

It Takes A Nation is a rallying cry for political change in the US, with Ice Cube calling for Obama's election, but with a warning not to let to the people down once in the Oval office.
