ALBUM: Def Leppard, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge
(Universal)

Songs From the Sparkle Lounge, named after a backstage room that this legendary metal band used on their last tour to write songs and warm up, is classic Def Leppard, harking back to the slick production of Hysteria in the 1980s, but without uber producer Mutt Lange.

In the early '90s, with grunge bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the ascendancy, traditional metal bands desperately tried to reinvent themselves for the times and Def Leppard were no exception, releasing the under-par Slang.

But, since then, the group have steered themselves back on track and the first single Nine Lives, featuring country megastar Tim McGraw, has a great guitar riff that really jumps out at you.

Bad Actress is also a great rocker and, in another first for the Leps, the album contains no ballads.

So, go on and give British metal a go. You never know you just might like it.
