Everton 3-1 Newcastle
Premier League: AYEGBENI YAKUBU scored Everton's first penalty of the league season to secure European football for the second consecutive year.
Leon Osman was brought down by Steven Taylor and referee Peter Walton pointed to the spot to award the Toffees their first penalty after 3411 minutes of league football this season.
Yakubu, having already scored his 20th goal of the season earlier in the match, calmly slotted home, sending Newcastle keeper Steve Harper the wrong way.
"Just about right, last goal of the season penalty kick," joked David Moyes "The ref got it right this time."
Everton's second highest Premier league finish comes with a record points tally of 65, four better than their fourth place in 2004/05.
Kevin Keegan commented that Everton were an "inspiration to anyone" and that Moyes had "invested wisely" in order to challenge near the top.
Everton dominated the first half, emphasising the gap between fifth and the bottom half of the table.
Ten minutes into the match, Yakubu beat two defenders before screwing his shot wide.
Harper then punched clear a Manuel Fernandes free kick on 20 minutes, but the loanee was to get a second crack eight minutes later. This time, Yakubu powered home for his 20th of the season, the first to do so in a blue shirt since Peter Beardsley in the 1991/92 season.
Charles N'Zogbia's 30-yard freekick whistled over the bar before another Yakubu header was disallowed with Joleon Lescott in an offside posistion.
Eight minutes before the break, Harper mishandled Victor Anichebe's shot but the ball ran wide. Harper made amends, though, two minutes later with a one handed save from Osman.
Everton gifted Newcastle a penalty in the opening minute of the first half, which Michael Owen rifled through Tim Howard's hands to become the first Magpie to score at Goodison since Alan Shearer's brace in 2003.
Everton rallied and got a deserved second on 69 minutes. Lescott was left at the far post after a quickly taken free kick and placed his 10th goal into the opposite corner.
"I'm going to have to start setting tougher targets," Moyes explained after setting the defender that tally earlier in the season.
The penalty wrapped up a good game and a good season, but Moyes, ever the optimist, claimed that "the most pleasing season is still to come."
