TURC 'spells trouble for trade unions,' warns MP

Monday 23 January 2012

Labour MP and former minister John Healey issued a special alert to Morning Star readers regarding the launch of the Trade Union Reform Campaign by right-wing Tories at Westminster tomorrow.

Speaking exclusively to the Star, Mr Healey said: "The TURC launch spells trouble for trade unions.

"It signals a serious Tory intent to step up the attack on unions and protections for people at work.

"Some new Tory MPs are more extreme than Thatcher or Tebbit.

"First in their firing line were workplace reps with a backbench bill to scrap legal rights in place for nearly 40 years.

"Strong Labour opposition defeated the bill a fortnight ago, but the Tories are attacking on all fronts - from reps to rights at tribunals and from union political funding to proper pensions.

"Conservative MPs are giving a cover of credibility to this new anti-union campaign.

"TURC is set up to do the political dirty work for senior Tories who many suspect are happy to see such extreme arguments against trade unions because they make the government's own moves to weaken working rights seem more moderate."
