Frampton set for York Hall defence

McGuigan prodigy takes on Scotland's Hughes
Friday 27 January 2012

BOXING: Rising star Carl Frampton defends his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title tomorrow night against Scotsman Kris Hughes at east London's York Hall.

Frampton (11-0, 7 knockouts) has been tipped for big things and the Belfast fighter, who is managed by Barry McGuigan, will be looking to continue his steady progress against the marginally more experienced man from Bellshill.

Hughes has lost just once in 16 bouts, but Frampton, who claimed his strap against Aussie Mark Quon last September, will be looking for a convincing win as he works towards a shot against the likes of British champion Scott Quigg and European titlist Kiko Martinez.

Frampton has insisted that he will not take Hughes lightly and said last week that his opponent had helped him focus by claiming that he isn't worthy of the hype surrounding him.

"He's a tall, awkward southpaw, he may be hard to get to for a while," said Frampton. "But he's been saying a few things to reporters and online that I'm not worth the hype and so on.

"That's the sort of thing that motivates me so he's probably made his first mistake there as that will give me extra drive."

He added: "He's a big lad and he's boxed at featherweight and super-featherweight and above that as well. I don't know where that comment came from, but there you go."

Chief support tomorrow sees Erick "The Eagle" Ochieng meet Nick Quigley for the vacant English light-middleweight title, while Islington middleweight prospect John Ryder looks to extend the unbeaten start to his career to nine fights against Pole Mariusz Biskupski.

Daniel Cadman and Robin Reid face off in an eight-round super-middleweight clash, unbeaten lightweight fighter Ryan "Crash Bang" Taylor faces "Rockin" Robin Deakin, and Enfield light-heavyweight Andreas Evangelou takes on Robert Studzinski.

Canning Town cruiserweight Wadi Camacho also makes his debut against Moses Matovu.
