Exhibit shows root of tapping scandals

Monday 13 February 2012

With disturbing revelations continuing to emerge from the Leveson inquiry about the cynical and unscrupulous behaviour of News International, readers might like to note that the excellent exhibition on the Wapping dispute organised by Unite, the NUJ and others continues at the Bishopsgate Institute, London EC2 until February 29.

A direct line can be drawn from the dispute - and the collusion it revealed 25 years ago between the then Tory government, the police and News International - to the current News of the World phone hacking scandal, which has revealed to a wide audience the dark side of Rupert Murdoch's global empire.

You hope that Judge Leveson considers the lessons offered by history during his inquiry and recognises the role of unions in protecting workers' rights, promoting ethical reporting and limiting the powers of newspaper owners and editors!
