Plunging morale among students facing a future on the dole was revealed on Friday in a study involving over 500 secondary school teachers.
It revealed that the recession is also taking its toll on children across Britain with students arriving at school hungry, dirty and struggling to concentrate.
In some cases "scavenger students" had been caught finishing scraps of food or using school as a place to warm up and eat a decent meal.
The study was commissioned by the Prince's Trust and the Times Educational Supplement.
