Liverpool signing Gielnik hoping to heap misery on Gunners

Women's Super League preview
Friday 04 May 2012

Women's football: Defending Women’s Super League (WSL) champions Arsenal will look to put the disappointment of Thursday’s FA Women’s Cup semi-final loss behind them by taking three points from Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

Laura Harvey’s side, who have won the cup 11 times, went down 2-0 to Chelsea in the contest.

The defeat served to fire up last season’s treble winners with the likes of Rachel Yankey calling for a positive response, but Liverpool will be fresh for the encounter after having their previous fixture, a home clash with Lincoln, rained off.

And the Reds were handed an extra boost by clinching the signature of Australian striker Emily Gielnik from Brisbane Roar.

Gielnik, 19, was recently called up to the senior national side and is relishing her chance to play in the WSL, as well as leading the line against the Gunners.

She said: “Hopefully we can get a good result on Sunday and I can go on to make a real contribution to the team up front this season.”

Elsewhere Lincoln, who have four points from two games, visit Everton knowing that a win could see them top the table if Arsenal stutter.

Chelsea could also close in on the top spot if they can beat Bristol Academy, while the Blues’ Cup final opponents Birmingham host Doncaster.
