Shane Sutton set to leave hospital

Friday 09 November 2012

Cycling: British Cycling head coach Shane Sutton is set to be released from hospital tomorrow after suffering a head injury while riding his bike in Manchester.

Little more than 12 hours after Tour de France champion and four-time Olympic gold medal winner Bradley Wiggins was knocked off his bike, his mentor Sutton was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 206 being driven by a 61-year-old man in Levenshulme on yesterday morning.

Australia-born Sutton is making a good recovery, British Cycling announced today.

A spokesperson said: “Shane is making steady progress but is likely to remain in hospital for one more day under observation.”

Sutton has worked with the British team since 2002 and has been credited with playing a major role in transforming the fortunes of the sport in this country, including working closely with Wiggins.

The Tour de France winner spent a night in hospital in Preston after a vehicle collided with him on Wednesday evening near his home in Lancashire.

He suffered minor injuries including bruises to his right hand and ribs, and is now recovering at home in Eccleston, near Chorley.

Wiggins’s wife Cath tweeted: “He is getting spoilt rotten ... at least for a while.”
