Miliband should learn from Obama's union strategy

Monday 12 November 2012

The successful re-election of Barack Obama is to be welcomed.

When campaigning it was noticeable that the United Automobile Union gave him full support. Why? Because his investment to promote industry boosted the collapsing car industry which had a positive effect on the whole economy.

There's a lesson for Ed Milliband and the Labour leadership.

The whole of Ford and much of our massive car industry has now gone abroad to cheaper-labour countries and not a word of comment from Labour.

No policy to restrict imports and put in place levies and no question of subsidies.

Yet in the past Labour did intervene, like when Austin was nationalised and became British Leyland.

I know trade unions support the defeat of the Tories but are they getting anything back?

Obama's policy got great support but over here we're still waiting to hear what Labour's polices are for industry - but we can't wait for ever.
