Amnesty International warned today that the people of Yemen's Abyan region have suffered a "human rights catastrophe."
The human rights watchdog have released a report entitled Conflict in Yemen: Abyan's Darkest Hour that documents violations of the rules of war during the fight between government forces and Ansar al-Shari'a, an Islamist group affiliated to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
It details horrific human rights abuses committed in Abyan during the rule of the Islamist group between February 2011 and June 2012 including summary public killings, crucifixion, amputation and flogging.
It also reports the Yemeni government's "reckless" response including indiscriminate attacks, the unnecessary loss of civilian life, obstruction of medical care and the "disappearance" of suspected fighters.
Attacks such as yesterday's horrific murder in Woolwich didn't happen before the 'war on terror.' It's time we recognised the consequences of the conflicts we've unleashed
