Tories in turmoil over EU

Sunday 13 January 2013

Tory leader David Cameron has engaged in a desperate battle to hold the party together as the rift over EU membership deepened.

Tory Europhiles have launched a fightback against demands for an in-out referendum with just a week to go until the Prime Minister's crunch speech on Britain's relationship with the EU.

Tory peer Lord Heseltine has publicly warned that the economy would suffer if Mr Cameron took a "punt" and committed to a national poll on membership.

And around 20 Tory MPs have apparently signed a letter, due to be published this week, warning of "massive damage" if Britain leaves the EU.
