Football: Manchester United opened a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League after demolishing 10-man Wolves.
The Midlands side, who lost defender Ronald Zubar after he picked up his second booking, are now rock bottom in Premier League, with goals from Jonny Evans, Antonio Valencia, Danny Welbeck and a Javier Hernandez brace heaping misery on manager Terry Connor.
Wolves, who have gone eight home games without victory, started off the better of the two sides and nearly opened the scoring through Steven Fletcher.
But the Scotsman could only divert the ball wide of keeper David de Gea’s right-hand post following a good delivery from Matt Jarvis on the left wing.
However United weathered the early storm and took the lead on 21 minutes through Jonny Evans.
The Northern Irishman netted his first goal for the club after he found himself unmarked four yards out following a Wayne Rooney corner.
The game’s turning point soon followed after a moment of stupidity from Zubar.
The Guadeloupe defender, who was booked early on in the half following a poor challenge on Rooney, stupidly picked up his second yellow of the afternoon with a rash challenge on Danny Welbeck.
From then on in the champions took control of the game with Valencia and Welbeck making it 3-0 before the break.
United were out of sight within 20 minutes of the restart with Hernandez scoring twice and leaving United looking down on the chasing pack.
Rooney said afterwards that it had been crucial for United to get a good result after last week’s Europa League defeat to Bilbao.
“It was a great result for us. Thursday was a disappointing night for us all,” he said.
“We knew it was important we bounced back and bounced back well. Over the last few years coming here has been a difficult game, so to come away with three points so convincingly is a great day for us.”
