La Boheme

ENO's production of La Boheme is a triumph,

North Sea Texas (15)

Directed by Bavo Defurne
Friday 06 April 2012

Defurne's debut is a delicious bitter-sweet comedy of a teenager's first love.

Set in a small town on the Belgian coast where Pim lives with his eccentric single mother Yvette.

He spends his days drawing and dreaming up fantasy lives.

When he meets Gino, an older boy next door, his life and desires change. But this first love seems likely to end in disappointment.

Much is suggested or implicit as we are encouraged to look beyond the apparent.

Along with the beautiful cinematography the acting debutant Jelle Florizoone gives a captivating performance in the lead role and Defurne totally succeeds in rescuing the subject matter from easy generic cliches.
